Events Raise Funds, Provide Insight, Show Appreciation
A number of events in recent months have kept Munson supporters busy and have helped raise money and awareness for several programs.
“From Women’s Hands”
“From Women’s Hands,” an all-female art exhibit and sale held annually in May, has quickly evolved into a major fundraising event for the Women’s Cancer Fund.
In just three years, the event has raised $42,000 for the fund, which helps women with everyday expenses when they are unable to work because of cancer.
This year’s three-day event raised nearly $20,000 in proceeds from art sales, raffles and donations. “Rosalyn Tyge and Jennifer Hutchinson have organized this event, and are very dedicated to helping women in our community who are battling cancer,” said Ruth Bloomer, Manager of the Munson Healthcare Regional Foundation. “This event shows that women with cancer are not alone, that many people care about them and want them to become healthy and strong again.”
The first “From Women’s Hands” in 2003 raised $7,000 for the fund. Last year’s event produced $50,000 in gross art sales, allowing for a $15,000 gift to the fund. The event showcases the work of more than 100 talented artists, authors, culinary professionals, and musicians.
Trap Shoot Benefits Hospice House
Friends of Munson Hospice House and trapshooting enthusiasts joined forces on June 4 to raise $6,000 for operations at the Hospice House. The fourth annual event was sponsored by Nye’s Trap Range in Kingsley. “The enormous costs of operating the Hospice House are unbelievable,” said Joan Cloutier, RN, a Munson Emergency Room nurse who coordinates the trap shoot. “Events like this help with the day-to-day and unexpected costs of running the house.”
‘A Grand Night for Singing’
More than 260 people gathered at the City Opera House on June 10 for “A Grand Night of Singing” to benefit the Hospice House. Music was provided by the 50-member Carolyn Mawby Chorale and pianist Kevin Cole. They performed popular show tunes from Gershwin to Rodgers and Hammerstein. The performance was followed by a champagne reception provided by Leelanau County vintner Larry Mawby. “It was a very lovely evening,” said Beth Karczewski, Development and Marketing Director for Hospice House.
Hospice House Garden Party
A Tribute Garden Celebration on June 24 was held to dedicate a new Entrance Garden at the Hospice House. The garden was donated by the five children of Charles and Catherine Germaine as a lasting memorial to their parents. The Tribute Gardens provide a serene place of respite for Hospice House residents, their loved ones, staff, and the community.
The Germaine Entrance Garden is the first major project to be completed and other gardens are planned. There is plenty of room for additional gardens. If you would like to create a lasting tribute to a loved one, call Beth Karczewski at (231) 935-9126.
