Education
Today,
people with diabetes can benefit dramatically from new ways of
managing the disease that were unknown even a decade ago. Equipped
with this knowledge, they can expect to enjoy life to the fullest.
Through the Diabetes Education Department
at Mercy Hospital Grayling, were helping those with diabetes
maintain their rich and active lifestyles. Because the impact
of the disease extends far beyond its physical aspects, we concern
ourselves with the whole person, from head to toe. Our community
healthcare system addresses not only the immediate and long term
medical needs of our patients, but their emotional, social and
other concerns as well.
The Team Approach to Care: A chronic
condition such as diabetes affects a person 24 hours a day throughout
life
.at home, at school, on the job, or on vacation. Consequently,
a diabetic patient becomes responsible for 99% of his or her own
health care. The Diabetes Case Manager help people with diabetes
take control of their lives, skillfully and confidently.
The staff in the Diabetes Education Department
consists of a Diabetes Case Manager and Registered Dietitians
who work closely with the physicians to insure quality care. Our
team approach allows the patient to define his/her own needs,
develop a program of care and take responsibility for implementing
it.
Educational Programs: At Mercy Hospital
Grayling, we conduct an inpatient education program and an outpatient
program. We encourage the patients to have their families attend
the classes with them. These sessions cover the latest ideas and
techniques in diabetes management, blood glucose monitoring, nutrition
and meal planning, glucose pattern control, stress management
and many other important topics, as deemed appropriate.
Mercy's diabetes program is certified by the Michigan
Department of Community Health and is American
Diabetes Association Recognized. These assure that those with
diabetes are receiving the highest standard of care for diabetes
management.
Special Programs: The Diabetes Education
Department at Mercy Hospital Grayling sponsors the following programs:
Free diabetes screenings; community education; diabetic food assessments
and support groups. Many of our programs are offered in three
areas Grayling, Houghton Lake/Prudenville and Roscommon.
