Everybody experiences stress, but women tend to
be "stress magnets," absorbing the stress of family
members, friends, and co-workers. Stress wrecks havoc with your
health, and can even damage your immune system, making you more
prone to colds, flu and serious illnesses. Reducing stress reduces
your risk of heart disease, which is the number one killer of
American women. There are many practical ways to handle and control
stress. Here are some tips to use for maintaining your health
and feeling better:
Give your body what it needs. A perfect
start to the day is oatmeal topped with berries and skim milk.
In one bowl you have the tools to lower cholesterol and heart
disease, antioxidants to reduce cancer risk and the effects
of aging, and calcium and vitamins A and D for bone health.
Drink plenty of water and avoid caffeine,
which can increase anxiety. Staying well hydrated gives your
cells the fluid they need to function properly and improves
your skin. If urinary incontinence makes you reluctant to drink
water, see your physician. Treatments are available.
Exercise is a great way to reduce stress
and recharge. Make time for it every day. Need motivation? Fun
and beneficial exercise classes are available through Munson.

Get plenty of sleep. Eight hours is the
minimum.
See your physician for annual exams and
screenings. Mammograms and pap tests are key in early detection
of cancer. Also seek screenings for high cholesterol, diabetes,
osteoporosis, and colorectal cancer.
Get a massage. Massage therapy can help
reduce your heart rate, lower your blood pressure, improve circulation
and relax your muscles. To schedule a massage at Munson Medical
Center or Munson Community Health Center, call (231)
935-6929.
Go outside. Weed your garden. A little
sunshine and activity can achieve amazing results in reducing
stress.
Take a nap. Many highly successful people,
including Thomas Edison and John F. Kennedy, have extolled the
benefits of a good 30 to 45 minute nap.
Laugh often. You'll feel better.
