Babies in the NICU need a high level of medical
care. Often special tests are necessary to evaluate the effectiveness
of medications and evaluate how the baby is responding to treatment.
Newborn Metabolic Screening, (PKU)
The Michigan Department of Public Health requires
that all babies born in Michigan have a blood test, which checks
for several disorders, which, if detected early, can be treated
to prevent mental retardation or other serious problems. The blood sample
is usually taken at 24 hours of age.
Ophthalmic Exam
While in the NICU, some premature babies will
have an ophthalmic exam. Often premature babies need medications
and treatments that may affect their developing vision. Your baby
may be given eye drops that dilate the pupil prior to the exam.
An ophthalmologist will do the testing and make follow-up recommendations
as necessary.
Hearing Screening
Hearing tests are completed on all NICU babies
once they are stable in open bassinets. Munson Medical Centers
Speech and Hearing has special equipment that evaluates each babys
hearing. You will receive a card after the testing is done to
tell you the exam results. It is recommended that babies have
a regular audiologic exam every one-two years.
